As always, wear eye protection when messing around with springs, or don't do it if you do not feel comfortable working with something.
It is tough to clean the gunk off of the Ruger MK series guide rod, because the spring gets in the way. This tool holds the spring under compression, so it is easy to use a brush and solvent to clean the carbon and whatnot off of it.
There is a jig to hold the guide rod spring assembly, holders that SHOULD keep the guide rod from launching while cleaning, and a push tool to compress the spring.
